Deputy Chief of Army Staff said the protest of anti - coup prove ' some people want to create chaos . '

Thai military on Thursday ( 29/5 ) mentakan do not know when it will return to civilian rule , one week after taking over power in a coup .

Deputy Chief of Army Staff Chatchalerm Chalermsukh said that while the military did not want to continue in power , the present conditions are not appropriate for the general election .

"Today there are protests . This suggests that some people want to create chaos . Impossible to hold elections so today, " he said .

Chatchalerm said the coup , which was the 12th time in the last 80 years , is needed to prevent Thailand becoming a failed state .

The army has banned protests and arrested hundreds of government officials , politicians and anti - coup activists since the ruling . Most have been released after promising not to protest , but many more who have been called to surrender and face some punishment .
