National Coalition Syria will attend peace talks

Syrian government and the country's main opposition group Thursday confirmed that they will take part in a sponsored reconciliation conference of the United Nations in Geneva next year .

UN Secretary General Ban Ki -moon on Monday said the long-delayed peace conference , which was originally announced in May , will begin on January 22, 2014 .

The talks have been repeatedly postponed because of the warring parties and now they have been able to agree on the prerequisites and the list of participants .

The opposition Syrian National Coalition said in a statement that it " intends to take part " in the Geneva conference - 2 . This is the first direct talks between the government of Syrian President Bashar al - Assad and the opposition since the civil war in Syria that began almost three years ago .

Syrian Foreign Ministry , which has repeatedly declared its readiness to negotiate , also reiterated its plans in a statement .

But the parties have different expectations for the conference and the discussions .

The coalition said the main purpose of this conference is to discuss the " transitional government , which is followed by all authorities , " without Bashar or nearby allies .

Assad government , however , rule out the transfer of power to anyone .

Meanwhile the Free Syrian Army who supported the West , who fought with the Syrian government forces , said it was unlikely to attend the peace talks .
